Hands extend, reach out
Palms up as each flake lands
Crystalline, latticed
Unique.
Each caress the same
Is it cold?
Does it burn?
Is it pain?
There, only for a moment.
I do not exist.

Northeast Ohio [02 Dec 2007|11:38pm]
It's been a clean 7 years since I've lived up in NE Ohio. I have to say, I'm extremely happy being back. I don't think there's anything that could take away my identity as a Cleveland-native, Browns-backing, snow-shoveling, corned beef eating person. There are things that make me very nostalgic for when I lived closer to the city (as opposed to being out here in Ravenna). This is one:

I'm glad to be back on the north coast. Bring on the winter!

In other news, med school is med school. It's hard, time consuming, and I wouldn't want to be doing anything else. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have t read about cranial nerves and vascularization.

Shipping [24 Sep 2007|10:09pm]
I ordered some things for school last week online. Strange enough, their company is located in Grove Port, Ohio... but listen to this shipping route:

Grove City, Ohio to...

Wilmington - Clinton Fields, Ohio (south-east of Dayton, north-east of Cincinnati...) to...

Erie, PA (overshot) to...

Wilmington, OH (east of here, but getting closer).

It's like they're using darts to decide where to ship it next, with people hitting close around me, but not quite a bullseye. It's not a huge deal or anything, it just makes no sense.

And it's been an interesting week. Dissecting a human is fascinating. I'm tired now, though, so I think I'm going to lie down.

Instant gratification [14 Jul 2007|11:57pm]
Quick note. In my experience, Columbus has the worst drivers in the state. I've said it many times, and I firmly believe it. I always find myself wanting someone to get caught for the crap I see them pull on the road. Well, it finally happened.

Driving home from dropping Erica off after Liz and Terry's wedding, I was going 25 on 4th. I sped up to match the speed limit of 35, and I noticed a cop behind me. I had seen a number of them out there already, so it wasn't too big a deal... that and I know I wasn't doing anything wrong, so no biggie, right?

Well, right after looking in the rear view mirror, some fook of a tool swerved directly in front of me from the middle lane, slamming on the breaks to try to claim a space to park in on the left side of the road. I hit the brakes, managing to stop in time and completely blocking them from the space (real short notice). The cop behind me stops in time as well (cops are usually good drivers, you have to pass a driving test to become one). So, we sit there for a minute because I wasn't sure if I had to back up before going around the guys. The cop just sat there. I looked behind us to see no oncoming traffic and just decided to pull around. The moment I cleared the other car and started to take off, on went the lights. Immediate retribution for idiotic driving. If it only happened more often. :D

Griff [24 Jun 2007|11:45pm]
Ken Griffey Jr hit 2 homeruns tonight to move past McGuire into 7th on the all-time HR list (at 584).

He currently has 21 HR on the season.

Assuming that Griffey hits an additional 21 homeruns this year, to give him 605 in total, he would need exactly 151 to surpass Hank Aaron's 755. He is currently 37 years old.

Barry Bonds will turn 44 this summer.

Assuming Griffey plays to and through the age of 44, which would give him 7 additional seasons (his birthday is in November), he would need to average 21.571 homeruns each season for the next 7 years to match Aaron. Certainly doable for Junior.

Now, Barry Bonds has 15 homeruns this year so far, which would give him a total of a little over 30 if he keeps on pace until the end of the year. If he does, he will *hopefully* end his career with 764 total homeruns. In order to get to 1st on the all-time HR list, Griffey would have to hit an additional 160 homeruns over the course of the next 7 seasons (this is still assuming he hits exactly 42 this year and plays through age 44).

In order to do that, he would have to average 22.857 homeruns over those 7 seasons before retiring.

If he hits 40 homeruns a year for the next 4 years, he'll get it done.

If he somehow manages 50 over the next 3 years, he'll only need an additional 10 to top the projected 764 record set by Barry.

He CAN do this!

I believe he can do this. I *hope* he can. Griffey was one of my baseball idols when I was young, and the only reason I own a Seattle Mariners hat (and other Mariners gear, which has since disappeared). I must've been 8 or 9 when I first started being a Junior fan, and his return to Ohio was bittersweet: good points were that my Indians wouldn't have to face him and that he was in Ohio playing for an Ohio team... bad point was that I couldn't see him play, as I often made at least 2-3 Tribe/Mariners games a year.

Long story short - I believe in Ken Griffey Junior to surpass whatever record Barry Bonds may set. I don't care what team he plays for or where and when it is done, but he can do it. Even with the many years of injuries, he can still make it happen.

Paul Hoynes: Best I've Ever Seen [24 Jun 2007|09:14pm]
This is the sixth article in a series of baseball articles about the best players at each position that Cleveland Plain Dealer sports journalist Paul "Hoynsie" Hoynes has seen.

The position: center fielder.

The player: Ken Griffey JrCollapse )

I would have linked to the original page, but the CPD website is awful.

[ mood | nervous ]

I suddenly got really, really nervous. Apparently, a Wright St committee will review my final package for admissions into medical school tomorrow, and letters will be sent out this Friday.

Which means, I will not get my letter until I get home from an interview at the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo on Monday.

I will also be at NEOUCOM on the 11th-12th or so interviewing for alternate status, which at NEOUCOM isn't really alternate status seeing as they admit so many from their waiting lists (not a big first choice school...).

So yeah. Really nervous. Gonna go get my suit pressed today, maybe watch 300.

Zen Vision:M [15 Mar 2007|02:49pm]
Beth and I (mostly I) bought and received a Creative Zen Vision:M mp3 player the other day. I must say, I'm impressed. It won a number of awardsCollapse )

it has a great interface, good sound, picture, and video quality, and on the whole is a pretty excellent piece of machinery. The only downside is that I haven't been able to access the thing from my computer yet because it is an MTP device (read: only compatable with XP). I've been solely entertained with the FM stereo on the thing. Since I've been running windows 2000 for years (and Windows ME for years before that), I have to upgrade.

Sidenote: I will have to go kicking and screaming into Vista... although, my needs don't really require Vista, nor does my machine, so it's somewhat moot until I get a new computer down the line. Don't let the mac adds fool you. You don't have to upgrade now. It is made for higher-end machines and you might as well buy a new computer if you feel the need.

Although this restriction is actually more common than thought (the Ipod requires OSX...), PC users simply aren't used to such limitations. There are other players that are compatible with every desktop OS... why the sudden shift?

I suddenly realize I don't want to talk about that. SO... sorry.

At any rate, I'm not sure where to get a copy of XP, and how my computer will react to an upgrade. We'll see.

I will be in Toledo on April 1-2 for an interview at MCO, or MUC, or UTCOM or whatever they're calling themselves now.

Experimental music [18 Feb 2007|07:28pm]
My brother-IL, sis-IL, and I worked on a 1 hour experimental music project last week or so. We recorded a 60 minute simple bass drum loop, reminiscent of a house beat or something, and using various digital looping and live recording techniques, we played a completely straight 60 minute thing of music. We had a Korg, guitars (electric and acoustic), bass, a live drum kit, radio samples, a small amount of vocals, and other such fun. It was pretty cool. I would love to do it again with more planning, but we didn't edit anything at all. We recorded a video of the whole thing and meshed the audio from Pro Tools to the video to make a DVD. They then came up with a cover and track listings...

This was all done before Feldy's post on the whole crazy astronaut thing, which made it all the more amusing. Check it out:

Astronaut Love Triangle

The radio samples used were live radio talk shows discussing the incident at the time. So yeah, hilarious.

Religion: good or bad? [08 Feb 2007|04:27am]
Someone, in a very good (read: heated but civil) conversation about religion mentioned the following:

Morality will always exist because it IS human nature. All it takes to prove this is for one single person to behave morally. As long as one person knows what it's like to be moral, this will prove that even though not everyone acts according to it, it exist somewhere in the human instinctive mind.

His original response in its entiretyCollapse )

I was inclined to disagree, and here was my response:
